Lady Liberty : 138
Recently I was offered the chance to test out a stunning new 138mm lens from Rodenstock on my Alpa STC technical camera —basically, the Bugatti of cameras. It’s Swiss-engineered, ultra-precise, and an absolute joy to shoot with.
I had an open canvas to photograph whatever interested me, and as I brainstormed, I realized Lady Liberty recently celebrated her 138th birthday. Same number as the focal length of the new lens—138mm! It felt like it was a sign, a perfect marriage.
The Statue of Liberty is deeply personal to me. She was the first thing my grandparents saw when they arrived from Minsk, Belarus, back in 1914. Revisiting Ellis Island felt like the perfect way to connect my family’s story to this iconic symbol of hope and freedom.
While shooting, I decided to push some boundaries with how I used the lens and camera, breaking a few rules along the way. I wanted to give Lady Liberty a fresh, electric look, especially after our recent charged election.
Between the gear, the experimentation, and the personal connection, this project was an unforgettable way to celebrate such a timeless American icon.
As Ansel Adams said, “technical proficiency leads to artistic freedom”. I always loved that quote, I think that applies to life in general, not just photography.
